Collecting Early US Silver Dollars

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

Many US silver coin collectors focus on the famous Morgan silver dollar, but there are many rare and interesting silver dollars that pre-date the Morgan. The first silver dollars in the US were produced in 1794 at the then recently formed US Mint.

In 1794 and 1795, Flowing Hair silver dollars were produced. Bust silver dollars followed between 1795 and 1804. The production of silver dollars was suspended by Thomas Jefferson in 1806.

It wasn’t until 1840 that silver dollars were once again produced. Seated Liberty dollars were issued from 1840 to 1873, but relatively small numbers were produced.

US Trade dollars are interesting collectors’ coins. In response to increased trade with Asia and unfavorable currency exchange practices, Congress passed a Coinage Act in 1873. The new silver dollar was designed by William Barber and featured Lady Liberty sitting on top of a sheaf of wheat and a bale of cotton. These were the two most important crops in the US at the time.

In response to the massive amount of silver produced by the Comstock Load and plummeting silver prices, production of the Trade dollar was stopped in 1878, but proofs were minted beginning in 1879. Ten were minted in 1884 and 5 in 1885. This handful of extremely rare silver dollars represents some of the most valuable and rare coins in the world.

Less than 36 million Trade dollars were struck over the course of the coin’s 13-year lifespan. This includes approximately 11,000 proofs. Their scarcity makes virtually all Trade dollars highly prized, and especially those in pristine condition.

Ideas for Wedding Flowers

Monday, November 16th, 2009

If you’re not completely familiar with what kinds of wedding flowers are available, this briefing is for you.

Far and away the most popular wedding flowers are roses. Because they can be mod or elegant, neutral or bi-color, and compact or long, they can be made to fit any style or theme.

Gerbera daisies have beautiful, flawless blooms and come in colors ranging from yellow to pink to lavender. There are even mini gerberas with blooms that are only two inches wide, and they are available year round for purchase. Gerbera daisies are perfect for the bride who wants to convey a sweet, happy, and innocent feeling.

Lilacs are renowned for their entrancing fragrance, but have limited availability during certain times of the year. They are available in white or purple.

Celosia or Coxcomb flowers come in warm shades, ranging from yellow to deep red. They are available any time of year, and have four inch blooms. Celosias are shaped like fans and are not like any other flower you’ve ever seen.

Scabiosa flowers resemble pin cushions, and come in a delicate bluish lavender color or quiet white. Hydrangeas symbolize perseverance and understanding, and come in baby, standard, and giant sizes. They can be tinted to achieve colors not made by Mother Nature.

Orchids are unique specimens and are for the bride who wants something different. From lady slipper orchids to tiger tails orchids, it’s easy to see why orchids have come to represent beauty and refinement in the world of wedding flowers.

A popular filler flower that is available year round is the Matsumoto Aster. These daisy-shaped flowers range in colors from white to deep violet. Limonium flowers are another filler flower option because of their bulky sprays. However, limoniums do not smell the best, so a bleach-water mixture is recommended to keep the odor to a minimum.

No matter what time of year you get married, there are plenty of wedding flowers and fillers to meet your bouquet and arrangement needs.

Save Money and Still Have Beautiful Flowers

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Flowers can make any day brighter.  Fresh floral arrangements are proven to lift moods, and they can even soothe away stress and help you sleep at night.  Unfortunately, many people think of flowers as an expensive luxury, and not something that they can have every day.

However, when you buy bulk flowers the cost of your floral indulgences drops dramatically.  You no longer have to think of flowers as only something that can be used for special occasions.  You can save money and still have beautiful flowers for your home or for decorating events.

The key with buying larger lots of flowers is to not feel as though you will be drowning in blossoms.  Most flowers are available in a number of bulk sets, so that you can go all out for a big event, or just get a few dozen blossoms for a special personal occasion.  The flowers are shipped directly, so you get to enjoy them for their maximum lifespan.

Buying in bulk and directly can also show you just how long flowers can really last.  Most flowers on display in floral shops are well into their lifespan, so they don’t last all that long once you get them home.  When you buy lots directly, you get the full span of the flower without any middleman cutting in.

There really aren’t limits on bulk varieties, either.  You can have everything from mini calla lilies to roses in a full range of colors.  Even rare flowers are sold in bulk, and you can get petals, too, for weddings or soap making.

The only thing standing between you and all the flowers you want is the time it takes to order them online.  You can have beautiful flowers all the time, and not worry about breaking the bank.  Why not order today?
